Outstanding Traits
Explanation and Limits:
Species
innate:
-Longevity
-Moderate
contact telepathy
-Healing
(limited, and cannot be used in a duel due to time/attention constraints)
-Sharp
senses (better hearing, smell, vision, etc. that humans)
-Is
not inebriated by alcohol. (however, he is by a tea made from the leaves of the Rakakino plant, formerly grown on Liska)
-Vision:
Aurrin can’t see part of the visible spectrum on the lower end. All of the deeper reds (from about crimson
down) appear as black to him. The
tradeoff is that he can see a bit more on the higher end of the spectrum,
catching part of the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum.
Individual:
-Holder
of the Dreamstone (used to enhance many traits as needed)
Elemental Strength:
None, non-elemental
Elemental Weakness:
None,
non-elemental
Note about elements:
OOC:
Aurrin’s abilities do not fall neatly into any one elemental category, yet are quite
firmly and logically linked together under a more scientific view. Thus, it is practically impossible to assign
him to any ‘element’. His
attacks/strengths do have weaknesses, though they do not fall under any set
pattern of traditional elemental conflict.
For these reasons, along with the fact that I give greater weight to
(and think of virtually all my attacks in terms of) scientific principles than
magic, I have chosen to list him as non-elemental to avoid confusion. Personally, I find it infinitely more
fascinating to deal with attacks that aren’t simply countered by another’s
type, but have more specific workings and counterings.
Weapons:
---
Sword:
Astrathina
---
-History:
Legendary
broadsword of Liska, said to be forged in the powers of the Dreamstone by Jankanak, the first bearer of the Dreamstone. Radio-carbon and other dating procedures
place it at over 27 million years old.
-Properties:
Alloy
of tritanium, duranium,
ytterbium, adamantium and two other previously
unclassified metals. Exhibits a multi-dimensional crystalline structure (suspected to have been
wrought by the Dreamstone) that allow the sword to shunt excess power
into higher dimensions, like an energy sink.
Thus, it will not significantly heat, nor carry an electric charge or
related phenomena. (Exception: seems to
have a residual resonance with the Dreamstone, and can be charged with energy
ONLY by the Dreamstone, under certain conditions.) The same multi-dimensional lattice seems to
span time itself, and thus the blade exists simultaneously in all times. This makes the blade literally indestructible, as it always exists at
all points in time. How this effect was
achieved is uncertain, and all attempts to reproduce it (even by Aurrin
himself) have, to date, failed. Wide
blade allows for a very sharp edge without depreciation of blade strength. Non-magnetic.
-Appearance:
Relatively broad and short blade with a metallic blue tint. Has a golden-colored inlay down the flat of
each side of the blade, inscribed with a combination of the ancient Lithanian
language and some symbols which have not yet been deciphered. Handguard is the
same golden color as the inlay, square in cross-section, quarter-circle with
the radius faced into the blade. At the
center of the hand-guard, a small slice of the circle is filled in, extending
down onto the beginning of the blade on both sides. Upon this extension is engraved the greek capital Lambda. Why this symbol appears on the Astrathina is
a secret lost to antiquity. The hilt is
a silver-colored version of the same metal (a slight variance in the mixture
ratio is responsible for the different color) with black leather
wrappings. The pommel consists of four
metal flanges that do not meet in the middle, but firmly secure a translucent
blue facetted-sphere pommelstone within their midst. (pic:

Pendant/Jewel:
Dreamstone
---
-History:
The
Dreamstone is perhaps the oldest artifact in the known universe. The first recorded appearance of it is just
over 27 million years ago. Oral
tradition dates it to be far older. The
first bearer, Jakanak, told stories that it had shown
him in dreams of places it had been in times long past even at that point. (This is where it obtained the name it is
currently known by: the Dreamstone) If
he is to be believed, these stories date it beyond 1 billion years in age. Aurrin has seen some of these same dreams of
which Jakanak spoke, and believes it to be at least
1.5 billion years old, if not older.
Radio-carbon dating has failed to place an estimate, while more
sophisticated methods either fail or give such varying results as to be impossible
for accuracy. Composition is unknown, as
it has resiliently thwarted all attempts to scan it. Many, many peoples, scattered throughout the
cosmos, have learned to tap the powers of the stone, and entire civilizations
have risen almost overnight by feeding upon the secrets of its radiant
power. These societies have a tendency
to be remarkably unstable, and more often than not have met with tragic ends.
Liska
was one of the few (though not the only) exceptions. It is said that the Dreamstone fell from the
sky to Jakanak, who set it in a pendant form. Within the span of approximately five hundred
years, the Lithanians went from predatory clan hunter-gatherer subsistence with
minor medieval-scale abilities to post-oscillispace
technology. The success of the
Lithanians in the face of so many dismal failures has often been attributed to
more stable psyches and slower pace of life due to innately long lifespans, and
peaceful society attitudes of non-aggression.
The Dreamstone brought radical changes to Liska. Cities to shame anything on Earth arose
almost overnight. By the time a
generation had passed, the Lithanian lifespan had multiplied nearly a
hundredfold, they had stabilized their sun indefinitely, and were creating a
network of interstellar trade routes and building a sphere of influence that
would eventually come to encompass fully one sixth of the Milky Way as well as
part of the lesser Magellanic Cloud.
-Properties:
The
Dreamstone appears to work through the principle of Chaos. Within it is contained infinite chaotic
power, which literally overwrites reality through causing infinitely improbable
things to happen. It seems to require a
will to focus it, however. A certain
amount of order must be placed upon it to accomplish things with its
power. Because order inherently
conflicts with chaos, there will then always be a limit to what can be done
with it, set by the strength of the bearer’s mind, body, and will. Theoretically, infinite power could be
channeled from it. However, the price
would be infinite chaos in the mind, and it would drive the bearer insane in
such a way as the world has never seen to attempt such a maneuver. The thoughts of someone insane possessing
such power is truly terrifying. In
practice, such does not happen even when someone insane does take hold of
it. Theories on why this is so are
sketchy, at best.
-Appearance:
The
Dreamstone is a hexagonal, beveled-prism jewel of a medium-blue color that
seems to have a dim ambient glow which intensifies during use. The gem itself is inset into a round,
golden-colored (but not made of gold) medallion, which has a circular hole in
the middle of the disk. The gem is
attached to the hole at all six corners. On the disk’s face is inscribed a series of
characters and symbols, one at each vertex of the gem for a total of six,
purpose and meaning unknown. A hole in
the top of the disk connects it to a chain
of
like material which suspends the pendant.
Sample Attacks
(Note:
only a few specific attacks which have taken on a pattern are listed. Aurrin prefers to work on the spot,
conforming to each situation as necessary.
The following list is by no means a complete list of every attack he may
use.)
-EM
Radiation
A
faithful standby, tried and true, this is one of the most utilitarian strikes
available, useful for any number of things.
Depending on the frequency, may range anywhere within the
electromagnetic spectrum, including radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible
light, ultraviolet, xrays, gamma-rays, and even
higher frequencies. Effects range widely
depending on specific frequency. Most
deadly are the infrared (radiated heat), microwave (take a guess what it does),
and gamma rays. (high-energy, can kill by radiation poisoning)
-Jumpgate
Exactly
like one would envision, it’s a hyperdimensional
gate from any one point in space to any other point. The power required to create one is dependant
on three-dimensional distance between the points in addition to an initial
‘tearing’ energy. Not a weapon? Just wait till you see how Aurrin uses them…
-Multistrike
By
manipulating time’s ebb and flow, appears for approx 1.5 seconds in multiple
places. (jumps
back and forth over the space of 1.5
seconds again and again…) Allows combination sword strikes from simultaneous different
directions.
Bio:
Aurrin was born on the planet Liska in the
thirteenth age. (One age is equal to one
million Liskan years, 1 yr Liska = 2.16 yrs Terra) On the Terran calendar, it equates to January
16th 118624 BC, give or take a day for planetary rotational
lag. (Note: all figures from here
forward will be in Terran units unless specified otherwise)
In his early life, Aurrin was no different than any
of the other Lithanian children. He
began school at the age of twelve, as most Lithanian children do. He made good grades, with a predilection for
high achievement in the physical sciences and computers. School typically lasts until one reaches
about 4000, give or take.
(Postgraduate-level studies can last a lifetime, if so chosen.) He reached physical maturity at 80, again in
a typical fashion. His coat colors were
not extraordinary. In short, he was an
average student. It was in this time of
scholastic endeavors, when life was really only beginning to open wide its
possibilities for the enthusiastic young vulpine, that he became smitten (as
the young are wont to do) with another girl with whom he shared several
classes. They met for the first time
when Aurrin was only a week away from his 1254th birthday. In the following years, Aurrin came to grow
very fond of her, and only 521 years later, they were joined as lifemates (married).
Aurrin’s life seemed on the up-and-up, and he had already found his
niche in society and the universe.
But a dark shadow was falling slowly upon an unwary
populace. The Lithanians had, for a long
time, been the most laid-back race imaginable.
They tended to attribute this to long lifespans, which left them in no
want of time to accomplish whatever they wished. Between this and high levels of technology, a
society akin to a utopia had arisen.
With technology having replaced so many mundane chores, work was mostly
something one took on as a diversion, and only did when one felt like it. Energy was distributed freely, and a
part-socialist, part-democratic republic government had formed in response to
the actual lack of labor needed and abundance of resources available. The same technology that did the work of
their world also allowed them to cross the cosmos. Lithanian ships carried no weapons, but rather
relied on shielding and manipulator beams to impound delinquent ships and
remove them from the Lithanian sphere of influence. This worked simply because the shielding
techniques were so advanced that no one seemed to be able to do anything to
them. The patrol ships kept order by
allowing offenders to tire themselves into submission, then politely dropping
them off at some convenient point.
Tragically, this superiority bred complacency, and complacency developed
into a kind of apathy. A people so pacifistic
and advanced tended to discount, then forget, that
other races with malicious intents might one day challenge them with sufficient
force to overwhelm them.
Perhaps even then, there would have been a way to
fight such a foe, given time to improvise weapons, but such was not to be.
Reckoning came one day in the form of an
entity. From the depths of darkest space
it called out, contacting the elders of the council and requesting an
audience. The Lithanian sphere of
influence had been gradually built over the eons through requests for
assistance (which was gladly offered) and peaceful arrangements, never through
force. Thus, a request for permission to
join them would hardly be refused. The
entity knew this, and took fullest of advantage of it. Upon invitation to the High Council’s chamber,
in the capital city of
A coordinated strike followed,
a military coup of precision unmatched that crippled the entire Lithanian race’s
power within moments. Simultaneously,
all colony planets were seized and sterilized with extreme prejudice, the grand
council was murdered in its entirety, and the Lithanian race was systematically
exterminated from their home planet. The
movements were accomplished with a mixture of cloaking devices and jumpgates, but regardless of means, the end effect was
utterly devastating. Widespread
slaughter ensued on the surface, while any escape attempts were intercepted or
shot down.
In the midst of this, Aurrin found himself
trapped. Creatures under the control of
the entity, which now called itself the ‘Great Darkness’, were attacking
everyone in sight in a paradoxically efficient manner. He desperately tried to hide his mate, whom
he had only begun to live with (approximately 244 years married at this
point). His efforts were in vain,
however, as the creatures invaded his home.
Out of a sheer malice, they decided to make him an example to those who
tried to hide. Capturing Aurrin
securely, they dragged him bodily out of his house. Then, they ransacked his home until they
found his mate, Schala. She was taken out in front of him, and
stabbed to death while he was forced to watch.
Her dying screams echoed in his ears, seared into his memory forever...
A berserk rage overcame him, and he began to fight
madly using his only weapons: his claws.
His race’s distant predatory heritage, long suppressed, came to the fore
and aided him. He took down nearly
fourteen of the creatures with nothing but his claws and teeth. To this day, he remains uncertain how he was
able to do that, as he has never again experienced anything even remotely akin
to that episode. In the end, though, he
was subdued by a blunt impact to his skull, which should have killed him. However, his race’s healing trait came
through, barely, and saved him from death.
He was stunned into unconsciousness for hours. When he awoke, he found Schala’s
broken body at his feet and his entire planet in smoking ruins.
For days, Aurrin neither ate,
drank, or slept. He did nothing
save try to rescue Schala. She was dead, but he kept trying to use his
healing powers to wake her up. So
traumatic was the experience that his mind simply would not register it for a
long time. He alternately sobbed and
pleaded for her, until the reality finally began to set in on him. Against hunger and weakness, he managed to
bury her by digging a shallow grave with his own fingers and covering it with a
cairn of rocks. Distraught, despondent,
nearly suicidal, Aurrin somehow managed to find his way to the remains of one
of the nearby cities. There, he found
amidst the rubble a barely functioning craft capable of spaceflight and limped
to the nearest colony world ... only to find it in ashes. He repeated this with the next colony world,
and a third, until finally he reached the boundaries of Lithanian space and
landed on a planet outside.
He didn’t even make it outside the vehicle before
collapsing. Mercifully, one of the
locals took him in and gave him medical care while he recovered. As soon as he was well enough to speak, he
warned them of the grave danger that approached their world and now stood
poised to threaten a large portion of the galaxy. In a short time, he managed to procure a
small craft of sturdy construction and proceeded to leave and skirt Lithanian
space, searching for other survivors.
His search lasted nearly ten thousand years, and
slowly confirmed his deepest fears: there had been no other survivors. He followed up on every conceivable lead,
from rumor to report to scientific publishing.
It was as if his race had been erased completely in a matter of
hours. Finally, deeply exhausted and
wearied both physically and emotionally by his long search, he resigned to his
fate and settled on a planet near the galactic core.
There, he lived for nearly another thousand
years. In that time, he became one of
the most respected positions at the planet’s foremost university, but the
position seemed void and hollow, meaningless without someone to share it. His life’s purpose had been robbed of him,
and it was showing. Then, one day,
something completely unexpected happened...
The board of the university dug up records and found
out how long Aurrin had stayed with them.
Secretly, they plotted a date to commemorate his one thousandth year
with them. The world’s finest jeweler
(whom had many friends at the university), after much deliberation, decided to
donate a gift for the now-revered teacher: a bejeweled pendant. Thus it was, some
eleven thousand years after the Lithanian race had vanished, that Aurrin came
into possession of the artifact that had raised their civilization to unmatched
heights of technology and prosperity: the Dreamstone. Sadly, Aurrin did not realize at the time
what he had found, and for an additional three hundred years its power remained
hidden.
It wasn’t until Aurrin accidentally wore the pendant
to bed one night that he became aware of what he truly possessed. That night, the stone showed him an
impossible dream: the founding of his people.
So lifelike, so vivid, so real was the dream that Aurrin had difficult
distinguishing reality from dream for days afterward. When he came to his senses, he began to
understand finally what the stone really was, and that it had (in a sense)
introduced itself to him. Once again, he
took the stone to bed with him, this time deliberately.
No one is exactly certain what the stone showed him
that night, but it changed his life forever.
Those around him noticed an immediate change. He seemed driven, as though for once he had a
reason to exist, a purpose to fulfill.
He had a mission. Within a matter
of months, Aurrin departed, never to return.
He knew of only one thing in his heart now: revenge. With a righteous fury, he would strike down
the one who had murdered everyone he had known and loved. Most especially for her...
The attack did not go as planned. From the outset, it appeared to be
flawless. He expertly slipped past the
frontlines of the Darkness’ ever-expanding empire, which now occupied fully one
fourth of the galaxy. On the ‘adopted’
world that the Darkness had first conquered upon entering our corner of the
universe, Aurrin challenged it. The battle
was over within minutes. The Dreamstone
was strong, but its holder was inexperienced, and for that miscalculation, his
life was forfeit.
But so arrogant, so cruel was the Great Darkness, that it decided to torture this one who had
slipped away. It did so in the most
horrible fashion one could imagine: it revealed to Aurrin the fate of the
Lithanian survivors. They had been
collected up and integrated into the Darkness’ armies as scientists, mindlessly
controlled to make weapons of incredible destructive power. But the mindset of the Lithanians was so
utterly out of tune with the synergy of malice and knowledge required for such
an act, that they proved useless, unable to make anything of value to a
conqueror. So, in a fit of exasperation,
the Great Darkness had slaughtered them, one by one. Some were killed immediately, while others
had been tortured slowly until they begged for death.
And now, Aurrin had delivered to it the last
remaining member of that species, whom had evaded his full wrath for so
long. It was too perfect. The blow to end his life was swift, but swifter
still was the Dreamstone. In a matter of
time too small to be measured by eye or clock, it broke the boundaries of
space, pulling him across the cosmos in a final, desperate act of survival.
Aurrin landed once more upon a fringe world, close
to the galactic rim. Once more, his
battered, broken form was taken in and cared for while he mended. Once more, he gave them his dire warning of
what was coming...
Aurrin sought solitude. For forty-five thousand years, he meditated, studied,
learned of the Dreamstone and the phenomenal powers it contained. From time to time, he moved about, changing
planets, but ever seeking the refuge offered only in being alone. Eventually, he had learned all he could by
introspection and communion with the Dreamstone alone. To know more, to do more, he would eventually
have to enter the mainstream of society once more. The Dreamstone had told him of a place he
must go, and so he went. To Liska, his
ruined homeworld, he returned once more.
Amidst the rubble and ruins of the capital city of
Venturing out into the brave, new world, Aurrin
found that his nemesis had not lain dormant.
Though the going had been much slower, over one third of the galaxy now
lay within its evil empire, like a festering malignant cancer upon the face of
the galaxy. So, Aurrin set out to learn
how to fight. Swordplay took a long time
to learn with any proficiency, but he persevered. He took on an almost crusader role, removing
evils from power wherever he could find them.
But in addition, he was searching once more. Now, he was searching for warriors. For his plan had come into his mind, and now
he was looking to consolidate it with help, rather than attempt it alone. Warriors...
and a way home...
Such are the circumstances that brought Aurrin to a
backwater planet midway toward the fringe called ‘Earth’...
